Germany is crying!

But not only because of the lost soccer match against Spain. But that was only part of my journey through my home country, which is stumbling in many ways.

That night, I sat in front of the big screen with my friends in Upper Franconia, Germany. But before I got there, I already had an odyssey behind me. From one meeting to the next and Deutschlandfunk on the radio. The roads were a nightmare. construction as far as the eye could see. The highway was one big obstacle course: two lanes for trucks, one for cars, and everyone in a never-ending traffic jam.

On the radio, I heard the complaints about the current government and the shock at the rise of the right. It couldn’t just be the immigration policy. The wrong priorities in spending money also contributed to general dissatisfaction.

The economy was also in dissatisfaction mode. The business was pulling back, saving instead of investing. The silver bullet of the moment? Artificial intelligence. It was supposed to increase efficiency and bring the numbers back into the black. Suppliers from Asia were supposed to submit their CO2 certificates to keep import duties low. But the budgets for this were frozen for the time being.

The company’s offices in Asia also suffered from the cost-cutting measures. Local managers worked by the book or cooperated with financiers to get rich quickly. Purchasers preferred to make deals with suppliers instead of cutting costs. All to the detriment of the companies, which didn’t even notice.

Salvation was sought in sales. Headquarters sent its managers to Asia to increase sales. But the plan backfired. Asian customers quickly realized that the supplier was under pressure. The managers had to accept the prices dictated by the customer just to sign the order before they left.

An experienced interim general manager was needed. Someone who understood the local culture and situation and could build a bridge between East and West with experience in all departments. Through dedicated business development and transformation, he has so far achieved a turnaround in orders, satisfied customers, and increased sales.

But the CFO at headquarters was no fool. He tried to reduce the cost of the qualified interim manager by offering him a multi-year contract at a low salary. He knew full well that he would soon find another local manager in a permanent position. But the experienced interim manager refused. This left a critical gap in the branch’s leadership. “Never mind,” they thought, “the experienced sales manager can take over, he flies there several times a year anyway.

Am I exaggerating? Anyone who can relate to this and is looking for effective solutions for their plants in Asia should talk to me.
