New Patented Microdot Technology

Microdots have been used for many years by motor vehicle manufacturers, electricity, gas, and water authorities, and others in combatting theft and the chopping of assets for their parts. Some countries, like South Africa, have made the fitment of microdots to motor vehicles compulsory.

Microdots have been applied to cars by many manufacturers worldwide since 2002. BMW was the first user, followed by General Motors / Holden, and Subaru, and in the years that followed 28 other manufacturers and importers started applying microdots to their cars.

Why did this trend emerge?

It is to protect cars and components from getting stolen. Up to 10,000 microdots are sprayed onto every car. Each dot carries a unique VIN (or a PIN) for each car. This makes the car and its parts worthless to professional car thieves.
As a result, theft rates dropped by up to 65% on some brands. Insurance premiums also dropped. Owners did not have to suffer the trauma of their car being stolen.

What’s the new technology all about?

A leading participant in the microdots industry – DTS International Group – develops back-end software and systems to support microdot, micro trace asset marking, and anticounterfeit devices—as well as physical assets tracking and tracing.

DTS has just launched a newly patented “Micro-STR microdot verification system” that can electronically read microdots as small as 0.5mm (like a grain of sand) with up to 22 characters on a Dot). The AI-driven reader can instantly check the code against a database to verify the owner of the car (or other assets) or the status of the car (for example if it has been reported stolen). With the invention of Micro-STR, the current use of a hand-held microscope (and manual recording of the text on the dot) is replaced by the Micro-STR custom reader allowing fully automated reading and real-time verification anywhere, including in the field and difficult environments.

Who will benefit from this microdot technology?

Suppliers of automotive OEM (complete vehicles) and automotive components makers can avoid the negative stigma of having their vehicles and components stolen. This technology also assists avoid false warranty claims, as all components are effectively date-stamped with the time of their being sold. Law enforcement agencies, insurance companies, and warranty claims investigators already use the microdot technology for their investigations and the STR Readers will increase their efficiency many times.

Ultimately the owners of cars and other high-value assets are the winners.  Criminals are the losers.

Which devices are needed to read microdots and verify with official databases?

The package includes a proprietary reader and an app that operates on a mobile phone. The text extracted from microdots and an image of the dot is automatically uploaded to a website that approved stakeholders can access.
